However, the cleaning method proposed before towing the ships (probably to Texas) for recycling has some shortcomings with regard to preventing the transport of non-native species and poses some risk to marine mammals during the tow that will pass through or near National Marine Sanctuaries. A local site for recycling (scrapping)or artificial reef preparation makes the most sense for preventing transport of non-native species, avoiding collisions with whales,reducing ship oil consumption and diesel exhaust, and creating local jobs.
